Burlington, VT- Hits allowed on 0-2 pitches, five errors, 12 runners left on base and Ambiorix Concepcion all combined to hand the Vermont Expos their second straight loss as the Brooklyn Cyclones opened a three-game at Centennial Field with a 10-3 New York-Penn League victory on Tuesday night.
Concepcion, who was 4-for-6 in the game, smacked a leadoff home run on an 0-2 pitch from Expos starter Chris Goodman in the fourth inning to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead, then with the bases loaded in the fifth inning he doubled off Goodman on an 0-2 pitch to plate two runs. Two more runs, including Concepcion himself, scored on that double on a fielding error by Expos leftfielder Doug Vroman and a throwing error by catcher Devin Ivany, giving Brooklyn a 5-0 lead.
After an RBI single from Steve Mortimer in the bottom of the fifth gave the Expos their first run, Concepcion had an RBI single in the sixth inning for his fourth RBI of the night.
Vermont cut the Cyclone lead to 6-3 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings on RBI singles from Ofilio Castro and Doug Vroman, but Brooklyn scored four runs in the ninth inning off Expos reliever Gus Hlebovy for a 10-3 advantage. Vermont went down in order for the first time all night in the ninth inning as the Expos had base runners in each of the first eight innings, but left 12 runners on base.
Tyler Davidson was 3-for-6 with two runs, a double and two RBI for Brooklyn (20-11), which pounded out 16 hits for the game (12 was the previous high for hits allowed in a game by Expos pitching this season). Corey Coles was 3-for-3 with two runs and two walks, while Ryan Coultas added three hits for the Cyclones.
Castro was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI for Vermont (15-17), while Steve Mortimer had two of the Expos eight hits. Goodman (1-3) allowed five runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings to take the loss for Vermont, which committed five errors as a team in the game.
Brooklyn starter Mike Swindell (2-0) allowed one run on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts over five innings for the victory, while Marcelo Perez allowed an unearned run on one hit over the final three innings for his second save.
The two teams will meet in the middle game of the three-game series on Wednesday night with Greg Bunn making his first start at Centennial Field this season. There will be uncut Vermont Expos baseball cards for the first 750 fans in attendance.
