Cards Bomb Travs on Saturday

September 2, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals dropped a franchise-record 17 runs on the Arkansas Travelers on Saturday afternoon, winning by a score of 17-2.

The Cardinals battered Arkansas starter Chris Hunter (4-14) for four first-inning runs and a total of eight runs over 2 2/3 innings.

The Cards also took advantage of seven Travelers errors, a season-high.

Springfield got RBIs from Juarn Richardson, Cody Haerther and Iker Franco in the first inning, as they took a 4-0 advantage to the bottom of the first.

Leading 4-1 in the third, Gabe Johnson popped his second grand slam of the year and his eighth home run of the season, making it 8-1.

An RBI single from Jarrett Hoffpauir in the fourth made it a 9-1 game.

Cards' starter Blake Hawksworth (4-2) had it on cruise control for most of the day. Hawksworth went seven innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits. He struck out eight, while walking just one batter.

Leading 9-2 in the ninth, Springfield scored eight times to completely put it out of reach. Juan Richardson's two-run shot and Jarrett Hoffpauir's three-run homer highlighted the inning. Richardson's team-leading 17th and Hoffpauir's seventh both came off Travs' reliever Kyle Edens, putting Springfield up 17-2. The 17 runs surpass the previous franchise-high for runs scored, set against Wichita on July 18th, earlier this season.

Chris Russ and Dennis Dove each worked a scoreless inning out of the Cardinal bullpen.

Nick Stavinoha and Jarrett Hoffpauir each had three hits to lead the Cardinals' offense, which pounded out 18 total hits on Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals improve to 27-42 and 66-71 overall with the victory. Springfield will send Mike Parisi (9-7) to the mound on Sunday in the regular season finale. Arkansas, hosting the last game in Ray Winder Field history, will go with right-hander Jesse Smith (7-13). Game time in the 2006 regular season finale will be 2:00pm.

The Springfield Cardinals wish to thank all the great fans who came out to Hammons Field and made 2006 so special!
