Springfield Cardinals News Release

Midland, TX - After winning two straight games, the Cardinals came into Monday's game at Midland with a lot of confidence. They had the first two batters reach base in the first inning, but the Cards could not turn it into runs.

Midland came up in the bottom of the 1st against Cardinals starter David Kopp and did not go out on defense again until five runs had crossed the plate. Kopp walked the first two batters then allowed a single to load the bases. Anthony Recker then drew a bases loaded walk to score the first run and Corey Brown bounced into a fielder's choice to score the second run of the inning. Alex Valdez drew another walk to load the bases again for Yung-Chi Chen who promptly doubled to right center to score two more runs to make the score 4-0 and put runners at second and third. Steven Kleen capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field to give Midland a 5-0 lead.

The Cardinals came up in the top of the second and loaded the bases with no outs before Colt Sedbrook bounced into a double play to score Springfield's first run making the score 5-1.

Springfield again got runners on base in the 4th against Midland starter Ben Hornbeck after a Daryl Jones single and a Charlie Cutler double with one out. Colt Sedbrook stepped to plate and delivered a two-run single to bring the Cardinals within two runs, 5-3.

The Cardinals clutched up in the 5th as they plated six runs in the inning, all with two outs. After Andrew Brown singled to lead off the inning, back-to-back strike outs led to Pete Kozma's triple to left center bringing the Cards within a run, 5-4. Charlie Cutler followed by reaching on an error allowing Kozma to score from third and tie the game 5-5. Colt Sedbrook then drew a walk before Adron Chambers singled to center to score Cutler and give the Cards the lead 6-5. With runners on first and second, Aaron Luna coaxed a walk. Steven Hill then came up and cleared the bases with a booming doubled to left to put Springfield ahead 9-5.

Leading by four in the 8th, Springfield added two more to the scoreboard as Andrew Brown collect and RBI single and Daryl Jones added an RBI ground out to give the Cards an 11-5 advantage.

David Kopp would last four innings and really settled down allowing just two hits after the first inning, but did not factor in the decision. Ryan Kulik was outstanding in relief allowing a run on three hits over the next four innings of work. Tom Eager came in for the 9th and allowed two hits but no runs to wrap up the 11-6 Cards win.

Springfield will finish their series Tuesday in Midland and will send right hander Shaun Garceau to the mound for his second start of the year against right hander Travis Banwart for the RockHounds. Game time is scheduled for 6:30pm central time.
