Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Tulsa Drillers took the final two games of their five-game series with Springfield, shutting out the Cards by a score of 3-0 on Saturday night at Drillers Stadium.
Tulsa starter Esmil Rogers was overpowering, striking out ten hitters in eight scoreless innings, picking up the win. Rogers has not allowed an earned run in 21 innings pitched against Springfield this year.
Springfield starter Lance Lynn was up to the challenge for the first three innings, but walked the bases full in the fourth. Darin Holcomb's RBI single to right was Tulsa's first hit off Lynn, as it put the Drillers up 1-0. A sac fly by Cole Garner would follow, making it 2-0.
Lynn gave up another run in the sixth, as Daniel Mayora opened the inning with a double, then moved to third on Michael Paulk's single. Mayora singled when Cards' catcher Tony Cruz picked off Paulk at first base, as he got into a rundown long enough to allow the run to score, putting the Drillers in front 3-0.
Lynn (5-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits over six innings, walking five and striking out four.
Springfield rarely tested Rogers, who allowed just five hits in his eight innings. Springfield got two hits in the sixth inning, but Mike Folli and Tyler Henley were left stranded when Daniel Descalso ended the inning with a fly ball to left field. The Cards put two on to open the eighth, when Pete Kozma and Folli singled consecutively to open the inning. Rogers buckled down though, retiring the next three hitters, including a strikeout of Henley to end the threat.
Tulsa closer Andrew Johnston walked Descalso to open the ninth, but got the final three hitters to earn his league-leading 17th save.
Sam Freeman made his Double-A debut, following Lynn with two scoreless innings of relief.
Springfield is now just two and a half games up over Northwest Arkansas and three games up over Tulsa with just ten games to play in the first half.
The Cards (34-26) send Brian Broderick to the mound on Sunday, as he takes on the Arkansas Travelers in his Double-A debut. Tommy Mendoza (3-2) will throw for the Travs, with game time scheduled for 6:00pm from Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.
Springfield opens an eight-game home stand at Hammons Field, on Thursday, June 18th, as they take on the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and the Arkansas Travelers.
Don't miss out on the Symphony in the Sky on Friday, June 19th, as the Springfield Symphony will play during the AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks Display at Hammons Field.
