Cards Bite Back, Win in 9th

New Jersey Cardinals News Release


This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) beat the Batavia Muckdogs (Philadelphia Phillies) 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning. New Jersey improves to 31-39 as the Muckdogs drop to 27-44. Mike Tamulonis (2-1) picked up his 2nd win for the Cardinals as Caleb McConnell blows a save and (0-4) gets the loss for the Muckdogs. Matt Blanton who started the game went 7 innings giving up 7 hits, 3 earned runs, and struck out 5. Tamulonis who got the win pitched 2 scorless innings, but giving up 1 hit and 1 walk, while striking out 2.

The Cardinals came back form a 3-0 deficit by scoring 1 run in the 7th, 1 run in the 8th and 2 in the 9th for the win. In the 7th inning with 2 outs Sal Frisella tripled and then Jose Virgil singled to score Frisella. In the 8th inning with one out, Kevin Estrada singled. Then Omar Pena moved Estrada to third base with a single. Melvin Falu singled to score Estrada. Going into the bottom of the ninth Brendan Ryan led off with a single. Frisella singled and Jose Virgil also singled to score Ryan to tie the game at 3-3. The Muckdogs brought in Matt Padilla for McConnell to save the game. Joe Mather laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Padilla tried to get the out at third and all runners were called safe. After pinch hitter Daylon Monette struck out, Estrada got the game winning RBI single to score Frisella.

Frisella was 2-4 with, a triple, single and 2 runs scored. Jose Virgil was 2-3, 2 RBI singles. Melvin Falu was 2-4, a single, double and 1 RBI. Kevin Estrada was 2-5 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

The Cardinals continue their home stand tomorrow night at 5pm with the Batavia Muckdogs. It will be Claudia Cardin-Al Bobble Head Giveaway sponsored by Sprint & Yellow Pages. It will also be the Pepsi Cola Family Catch OnThe Field and The Daily Record Swing For The Fences where 2 lucky fans will have a chance to hit a homerun at Skylands Park to win $5,000.
