The Rundown

Matt Pearce looked very sharp on the mound for the Palm Beach Cardinals as he tossed six innings of one run baseball, the run was unearned. He was able to command the strike zone early and get the Tortuga batters to make contact into outs.

The Cardinals ended up striking early as they scored in the second inning. Grayson reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a gound out by Allen Staton. Orlando Olivera then singled to left allowing runners on the corners with one away. Steve Bean then grounded into a double play to end the inning, but Palm Beach scored on the play as the first baseman touched first then threw to second with a tag out at second base allowing Grayson to score before the tag was applied.

The next two inning were scoreless for both sides and then the Tortugas got on the board in the fifth. Jeff Gelaligh started the frame with a single to right. Chad Tromp then reached on an error by the third baseman, Danny Diekreoger. Blake Butler advanced both runners on a Sac Bunt. Jonathan Reynoso came up to the plate with runners on second and third with one away and grounded out to first allowing Gelalich to just beat out the throw home to the plate. The inning ended on a Pearce strike out of Blake Trahan.

The Cardinals had more opportunities in the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out on three straight singles by Bean, Drake and Tice, but could not get any runs across in the inning.

The sixth inning was when the Cardinals finally took the lead as Danny Diekroeger started the frame off with a double to right center field. He then advanced to third on a ground out by Grayson and later scored on a ground out off the bat of Staton.

Schumacher would then spell Pearce and pitch two scoreless inning and allow the Cardinals to hold on to the 2-1 lead. Nick Howard would come in and pitch the eighth for Daytona and give up five runs on the night on three walks, two wild pitches, and only two hits, not getting a single batter out. Alex Powers came in to relieve Howard and gave up two hits as well before getting out of the inning with his team down 7-1.

Silfredo Garcia got the ball in the ninth and hit the first batter he faced. Angelo Gumbs followed that up with a double down the left field line scoring Aquino. Taylor Sparks then singled in Gumbs making it a 7-3 game. Gelalich then singled to left field allowing Sparks to move to third and Gelialich moved to second on the throw.
