Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees shut out the Fort Myers Miracle, 2-0, at Hammond Stadium on Monday night in the series opener.
The Manatees struck in the top of the second. Clint Coulter coaxed a walk out of Miracle starter Felix Jorge to start the frame. Jorge (0-1) rallied to strikeout George Iskenderian, but Fidel Pena lined a single to center to put runners at first and second. Then, Blake Allemand lifted a base hit on a 1-2 pitch into right center to plate Coulter and put the Manatees on top, 1-0.
In the fourth, Brevard County added an insurance run. With two outs, Iskenderian laced a double into left field. Pena then smoked a 1-2 pitch into deep center field that sailed over the head of Edgar Corcino. Iskenderian scored and Pena reached third for a triple to push the Manatee lead to 2-0.
The Brevard County pitching staff combined to keep the Miracle off the board with a large contribution coming from starter Bubba Derby. Making his first official appearance for the Brewers organization since being acquired in a trade with Oakland in February, Derby (1-0) struck out eight batters and scattered five hits in 5.2 innings of scoreless work.
Reliever Jon Olczack and Tyler Spurlin combined to record the final 10 outs. Spurlin polished off a two-inning save for his second of the season.
Jorge finished the evening with a quality start in his Florida State League debut. Totaling seven strikeouts over six innings, Jorge surrendered just two runs on five hits with a walk in a losing effort. Brian Gilbert tossed 1.1 innings scoreless and Luke Westphal went 1.2 innings with a punchout.
At the plate, the Miracle mustered eight hits, all singles, but went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. T.J. White and Alex Real each had two hits.
The Miracle (2-3) continue the four-game series with the Manatees (2-3) on Tuesday evening with left-hander Randy Rosario making his first start against Brevard County right-hander Brandon Woodruff (0-1).
