SCALAMANDRE THINKS ABOUT BIG LEAGUES ‘EVERY NIGHT'

Courtesy of Brian Heyman, The Journal News bheyman@thejournalnews.com

Rick Giannetti is ready to retire it, frame it and hang it on his office wall or display it in the trophy case. Now Rich Scalamandre just has to do his part for the Dominican College baseball coach. Because here's the policy: Make the majors and you get your jersey number retired. It's happened just twice among those who have dressed as Chargers - infielder Kevin Baez, who played for the Mets, and pitcher Frank Cimorelli, who pitched briefly for the Cardinals. But it has never happened for someone that Giannetti actually coached in his 16 seasons there. Scalamandre, though, left his program in 2002 with an opportunity. The school's all-time leader in wins with 31 and strikeouts with 302 was drafted after four years in the rotation, taken in the 23rd round by St. Louis. The soon-to-be 25-year-old right-hander is currently with the Class A Palm Beach Cardinals and throwing well, just like he did during his previous three seasons in the system.

WEEK IN REVIEW FOR THE CARDINALS

Information provided by Tony Suarez, Media Relations for Palm Beach Cardinals

If the Cardinals wanted to keep pace with the Vero Beach Dodgers for the East Division lead, they had to play well during their four-game series at Lakeland. They did just that.

After splitting the first two games of the series on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Cardinals swept the Tigers in a doubleheader on Friday- 2-1 in the game one, 7-2 in game two.

In game two, the Cardinals were led by Reid Gorecki who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Joe Mather and Ty Parker also had two hits for Palm Beach, while Rayner Laya added three hits. Eric Haberer (8-4) bounced back from a loss in his last outing to allow just one run on four hits in six innings to earn the win. In the first game, Mark Michael earned his first win since May 20- a 5-2 win also against Lakeland. Michael (3-3) allowed one run on six hits over five innings. Mark Worrell came on late to earn his league-leading 26th save of the season.

Brian Pilkington gave up one run on just two hits in a complete game effort over the Cardinals on Saturday night. Pilkington (6-7) struck out six Cardinals on the night, and he allowed his only run in the second inning on a single by Rayner Laya after he had hit Joe Mather with a pitch and walked Brady Toops. Cardinals' starter Dennis Dove suffered the loss. Dove (1-2) worked six innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Dove walked two batters and struck out three. The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead after two innings, but the Dodgers were able to tie the game in the fourth. The Dodgers plated two more runs in the fifth and one in the seventh for the 4-1 margin. Besides the single by Laya, the Cardinals only other hit came in the ninth inning by Brian Martin.

The Dodgers pounded out 14 hits which included an inside-the-park home run in the third as they knocked off the Cardinals 9-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Dodgers jumped on Cardinals' starter Jose Garcia for three runs in the first and one in the second. In the top of the third with Cory Dunlap on first, Anthony Raglani hit a sinking line drive to center that went under the glove of Reid Gorecki. Dunlap scored, and Raglani scampered around the bases and scored on the play as well for the inside-the-parker. Garcia (6-5) allowed six runs and 10 hits in five innings pitched while striking out six. The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single by Mike McCoy, but the Dodgers added three unearned runs off Chris Russ in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Cardinals added a run in the seventh on a single by Brandon Marcelli and a run in the eighth on a Brian Martin double to end the scoring at 9-3. Vero Beach starter Alvis Ojeda (5-1) worked six innings and surrendered one run on four hits.

The Cardinals entered the series against the Dodgers just two games back, but with two consecutive losses have now dropped four games out of first. The Cardinals will look to avoid the sweep on Monday night. Mike Parisi threw eight shutout innings and allowed just three hits while striking out seven as the Cardinals avoided the sweep by beating the Vero Beach Dodgers 3-0 on Monday night in only 1 hour and 49 minutes. Parisi was in control from the beginning and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning - a double to Chin-lung Hu. The Cardinals got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the second as they plated three runs. After a walk to Brian Martin, Matt Dryer launched his 17th home run of the season to left field to make it 2-0. Joe Mather followed with a triple off the left field wall, and Mike McCoy hit a sacrifice fly to score Mather. In the eighth, Parisi allowed back-to-back singles with two outs, but was able to get out of the inning. Mark Worrell pitched the ninth to earn his league-best 27th save.

With one out in the top of the eighth and the score tied 3-3, Tuesday night's game between the Cardinals and the St. Lucie Mets was suspended due to inclement weather.

After a 38-minute rain delay to start the game, the game got underway under a light rain. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead after two innings after a two-out single by Rayner Laya. The Mets tied the game in third, and it remained 1-1 until bottom of the sixth. Matt Dryer led off the frame with his 18th home run and second in as many days. Then later in the inning with Joe Mather on third, Mets' pitcher Ivan Maldonado balked to score the run.

In the top of the eighth, Andy Wilson homered to tie the game off Anthony Rawson. After Jamar Hill doubled, Rich Scalamandre came in the game to face Grant Psomas, and with a 3-1 count, the rains came and the game was suspended. Tuesday's game will be picked up from its point of suspension on Wednesday afternoon at 5:35 p.m.

Mets' leftfielder Derran Watts robbed what would have been a game-tying home run by Brian Martin in the bottom of the ninth to preserve a 9-7 win for the Mets on Wednesday night. The Cardinals, who fell behind early 5-0, rallied to tie the game with two runs in the third and three in the fourth. Brady Toops led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Mike McCoy. Jarrett Hoffpauir then doubled to score Toops and McCoy. Toops finished 2-for-3 on the night and McCoy was 2-for-4. In the fourth inning, Matt Dryer (pictured) doubled to lead off and scored on a single by Ty Parker. McCoy singled later in the inning to score Parker, and a sacrifice fly by Andy Schutzenhofer tied the game at five apiece. The game would remain tied until the sixth when the Mets plated two, but the Cardinals answered in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run blast by Dryer, his 19th of the year and third in three nights. The Mets scored twice in the ninth of Mark Worrell (2-3), and in the bottom of the ninth and a runner on, Martin hit a ball to deep left that was brought back in the yard by Watts. Eddie Camacho (2-2) picked up the win for St. Lucie.

Before all the action in the night cap, the Cardinals and Mets completed a game that was suspended due to rain on Tuesday night with the game tied 3-3. With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, Rich Scalamandre (2-2) was able to escape from a bases loaded jam by starting a 1-2-3 double play. In the bottom of the ninth, Reid Gorecki delivered a single with the bases loaded to give the Cardinals a 4-3 win.

On Thursday, Brady Toops hit a game-tying two-run single in the eighth and Joe Mather hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 12th as the Cardinals knocked off the Mets 6-5 at Tradition Field. The Cardinals trailed 5-3 entering the top of the eighth when Matt Dryer and Mather reached with consecutive singles. After a groundout by Mike McCoy advanced the runners, Toops singled to left field to tie the game at 5-5. In the top of the 12th, John Santor (pictured) led off with a pinch hit single off Mets' reliever Ryan Cullen (0-1), followed by an infield hit by Reid Gorecki. After a sacrifice bunt by Brian Martin, Mather's flew out to Jamar Hill in right field to drive home Santor for the game-winner. Cardinals' starter Mark Michael worked five innings and surrendered five runs - three earned. The Cards' bullpen combined for seven innings of scoreless relief, including 2 1/3 innings from newcomer Jaymes Torres. Anthony Rawson (1-1) pitched the 10th and 11th innings for his first win since joining the Cardinals. Mark Worrell came on in the bottom of the 12th for his league-leading 28th save of the season.
