Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, FL- The Palm Beach Cardinals may look back to tonight's 6-5 loss to the Clearwater Threshers as a key game in the race for the playoffs, allowing a comeback win due to a monstrous defensive collapse.

The usually steady middle-infield combination of shortstop Rayner Laya and second baseman Juan Lucena committed back-to-back errors in the ninth inning, allowing the tying runs to reach base off closer Mike Sillman. Clearwater third baseman Michael Costanzo provided the game-tying hit, with a two-run double over the head of centerfielder Colby Rasmus.

Clearwater scored the game-winning run in the tenth inning, after J.J. Johnson singled and reached second base, due to a fielding error by Randy Roth on a Troy Cate pick-off attempt. Tuffy Gosewisch singled up the middle bringing Johnson home.

Threshers' reliever Adam Shafer (2-1) picked up the victory, working two scoreless innings of relief. Closer Brian Reed worked a perfect tenth inning, in picking up his 8th save of the season.

Palm Beach reliever Troy Cate (2-2) garners the loss, allowing an unearned run and two hits.
