Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Ft. Myers, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers loaded the bases with no outs in the 9th, but lost to the Ft. Myers Miracle 4-2 Thursday night at Hammond Stadium. Eloy Gutierrez reached base four times, stole two bases and scored one in a losing cause. The Dodgers move on to St. Lucie for a 7:00 PM game Friday night.
Ft. Myers 1st Baseman Brock Peterson stroked an opposite-field 3-run home run in the first inning to give the Miracle an early lead. Their only other run scored on a two-out double from Luke Hughes in the fourth.
Vero got on the board in the third with a little help. Gutierrez drew a 2-out walk and David Nicholson lined a base hit to left. Adolfo Gonzalez then bounced a ball through third baseman David Winfree that was scored an error and allowed both baserunners to score.
The the scoring ended after the third inning, the Dodgers made it interesting in the ninth. Newcomer D.J. Jackson led off with a single to center and Gutierrez followed with a base hit to left. Pinch-hitter Xavier Paul beat out an infield single to load the bases against reliever Tim Lahey. However, Lahey struck out Gonzalez and coaxed a game-ending double-play grounder from Cory Dunlap to save his second game of the series.
