Springfield Cardinals News Release
Midland, TX - The Springfield Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the first and never looked back, cruising to the 5-2 win against the Midland RockHounds before 2,918 fans at Security Bank Ballpark on Wednesday night. RHP Sam Gaviglio matched a season-high with seven strikeouts through his 5.2 scoreless innings on the mound.
The Cardinals (21-24) jumped on LHP Andrew Werner (L, 2-3) and the RockHounds (25-20) right away in the top of the first. LF Mike O'Neill led off with an infield single up the middle, before racing all the way home on an RBI double from 2B Jacob Wilson. Werner retired the next two batters, but the Cardinals struck with back-to-back two-out blasts. RF David Popkins launched the first one, a two-run shot, before 3B Patrick Wisdom followed with a solo home run, increasing the early advantage to 4-0.
The four runs were more than enough support for Gaviglio (W, 2-6), who dominated the RockHounds bats through 5.2 scoreless frames. Starting with the final out in the second, Gaviglio retired eight in a row and nine of his next 10, racking up seven strikeouts and limiting Midland to only four hits.
LHP Ryan Sherriff followed with 1.1 scoreless relief innings, before the RockHounds got on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Facing LHP Lee Stoppelman, 2B Conner Crumbliss reached on a bunt single before a two-run home run by 1B Anthony Aliotti. After a double and a groundout, Stoppelman gave way to RHP Joey Donofrio, who got the Cardinals out of the eighth with no further runs coming in, keeping Springfield in the 4-2 lead.
The Cardinals padded the advantage back to three runs in the top of the ninth. Leading off the frame, DH Cody Stanley skied a solo home run to right field, making it 5-2.
Donofrio then came out for the bottom of the ninth and struck out the side around a walk and a single, slamming the door on Midland for the 5-2 win for the Cardinals.
