JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals clipped the St. Lucie Mets 2-1 in the series opener at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Tuesday.
Mets starter Dominic Hamel retired 16 in a row from the second inning through the first out of the seventh inning, but the next three Cardinals batters registered hits to break a 1-1 tie.
After Hamel struck out Brady Whalen to start the seventh inning, Aaron McKeithen doubled on the next pitch. Jhon Torres came up and singled on the next pitch to set up runners at the corners. Then Jeremy Rivas hit a 0-2 pitch to right field for a single to bring home McKeithen for a 2-1 lead.
The Mets were unable to answer against reliever Roy Garcia (2-4) over the final two innings.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Whalen hit a two-out double and McKeithen followed with a RBI single.
The Mets loaded the bases with no outs against Palm Beach starter Alex Cornwell in the fourth inning but could only muster a run-scoring ground out by Jack-Thomas Wold to make it 1-1.
Hamel (4-2) took a tough loss. He pitched 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
