Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

The Palm Beach Cardinals needed three outs in the ninth inning to leave Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium victorious on Tuesday night against the St. Lucie Mets.

But mother nature forced the Beach Birds to wait 18 minutes as a brief popup shower glistened the playing surface in Jupiter. However, the tarp was never ordered to coat the field, and play could resume at 8:44 p.m. From there, Roy Garcia worked around a leadoff hit-by-pitch to retire the Mets and strand a runner at first, as the Cardinals secured a 2-1 win over their foes from the Treasure Coast.

Garcia was the winning pitcher in the series opener, tossing four scoreless frames while striking out four batters in relief. The righty replaced Alex Cornwell on the mound, who surrendered an earned run over five innings pitched. The southpaw also struck out six St. Lucie batters while walking just one.

Palm Beach opened the scoring with an Aaron McKeithan two-out single to score Brady Whalen. The Mets would tie the game in the fourth, before the Cardinals retook the lead in the seventh on a Jeremy Rivas RBI single.

The catcher McKeithan's two hits helped pace the Cardinals on Tuesday, going 2-3 with a double, with designated hitter Jhon Torres matching McKeithan's game line.

The win is Palm Beach's third in a row over St. Lucie, dating back to the teams' prior series in May. The Cardinals are 7-3 in their past 10 matchups, which is tied for best in the Florida State League.

The Cardinals are back in action Wednesday night against St. Lucie, with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. It is Silver Slugger's Wednesday, and Tink Hence will take the mound in his first appearance since starting in Palm Beach's combined no-hitter on June 15.
