Cardinals Blast Past Astros, 18-2

Johnson City, TN– Five runs in the bottom of the first ignited the Johnson City Cardinals to a win over the Greeneville Astros Thursday night at Howard Johnson Field by a score of 18-2. The Cardinals now sit at 30-27 overall just 4 ½ games behind the first-place Astros, who are 34-22.

The first five batters in the Cardinals line up were able to score before the end of the first inning to give Johnson City a five run lead. José Delgado (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Juan Lucena (Lara, Venezuela), Brandon Yarbrough (Ellerbee, N.C.), Tony Granadillo (Valencia, Venezuela), and Billy Becher (Chandler, Ariz.) scored the runs. Tonight's game marked Yarbrough return behind the plate.

In the second inning the Cardinal's would add one more run to their tally. They would add eight more to that in the third off of only five hits for a 14-run lead. Becher would add one in his first time at bat, Lucena would add three with a base-clearing double, Yarbrough would follow with a two run home run, and Becher would add two more with his home run.

The first run for the Astros would come in the top of the four from Antonio Garcia and they would pick up another run in the fifth.

The Cardinals would add three more runs before the end of the game for the 18-2 final. On the night, Johnson City had 14 hits and one error, while Greeneville was held to only seven hits and had three errors.

Justin Brown [2-3] walks away with the win for the Cardinals, while Felipe Paulino [1-1] takes the loss for the Astros.
