Pulaski Mariners News Release

Pulaski, VA— The Blue Jays defeated the Indians handily after a short-lived two-inning Burlington lead started off game one of a four game series at Historic Calfee Park. On their way to a 7-3 win, Pulaski scored in four of their final six innings at the plate and pitched a shutout from the third inning on. Because both Pulaski and Danville won Thursday night, the now heated contest for division leadership remains at a tie.

The Blue Jays hammered the ball after a two-inning slump started things off, breaking out with a game high three runs in the third. Centerfielder Yuber Rodriguez was a keystone in the breakout rally, hammering a first-pitch liner to right centerfield and reaching second base to score three teammates in the process. Rodriguez, 2-for-4 on the night with three RBI and one run scored, hit his second double in the seventh to start a two-out rally that produced two runs.

Sharing the limelight with Rodriguez and driving in the rest of Pulaski's runs was designated hitter Joshua Lex. Lex, 2-for-4 on the night with two RBI and two runs scored, also cracked two doubles, driving in one run in the third and two in the seventh. When asked about his seventh inning double to leftfield, Lex replied, "I was looking for a ball up [and I got one]." Lex also commented on the fact that his finger, previously broken, healed completely during the season, contributing to recent success.

Pulaski's bullpen took control following starter Yesson Berroa's early departure from the game as a result of being hit in the back by a wild throw home. Daryl Harang (2-1) received the win and when combined with the two pitchers that followed, Pulaski relievers tossed their way to scoreless baseball from the third inning on, striking out seven and walking only three in the process.

Pulaski returns to Calfee Park for game two against Burlington Friday night.
