Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - Winners of three straight games and five of their first six on the homestand, the Cardinals looked to make it four in a row with a win over the Arkansas Travelers and get pitcher Scott Gorgen his first win since May of 2010.
The Travelers, after going quietly in the 1st inning, took the lead in the second against Gorgen. A lead-off walk and an error put runners on first a second and after a one out single by Carlos Ramirez, the Travs had the bases loaded. Rian Kiniry, with a 1.81 batting average coming into the game, tripled down the right field line to clear the bases give Arkansas a 3-0 lead.
Gorgen settled down for the next three innings limiting Arkansas to three hits, but allowed a double and a single to start the top of the 6th before giving way to Justin Wright out of the bullpen. After a lineout, Wright had a double play turned behind him to keep Springfield within three.
Still with a zero on the scoreboard, the Cardinals got a lead-off double from Jermaine Curtis to start the bottom of the sixth, but was stranded there as the 3-4-5 hitting were retired in order.
Springfield had their best scoring chance in the 7th as Greg Garcia walked, Adam Melker singled and both advanced to second and third on a throwing error. But, after being ahead in the count 3-1, Jose Garcia was called out on strikes to end the threat.
Kevin Thomas took over for the Cardinals on the mound in the 8th and allowed two runs to the Travelers. Casey Haerther delivered an RBI fielder's choice and Carlos Ramirez chipped in an RBI single with two outs to give Arkansas a 5-0 lead.
The Cardinals pounded out 10 hits in the game, but were kept off the scoreboard by the stingy Travelers' pitching staff in a 5-0 loss, snapping their three game winning streak. Springfield was 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight in the game.
The Redbirds will conclude their four game series with the Arkansas Travelers Tuesday afternoon at 12:08pm. John Gast will start for Springfield against AJ Schugel of the Travs. It's also another Dollar Dog Day featuring $1 hot dogs all game long thanks to our friends at Great Southern Bank.
