Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - After a one-hour rain delay and a solid bullpen effort, the Springfield Cardinals defeated the San Antonio Missions 7-4 in the second game of their three-game series.
The Missions would crack the scoreboard first, with a Cody Decker's two-out RBI single to right field after a leadoff walk to Dean Anna.
The Cards would come right back in the bottom of the first when Jamie Romak's slow roller on the infield brought in Jermaine Curtis to tie up the game one-all. Jermaine Curtis would finish 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.
San Antonio would add two in the top of the third with a Nate Freiman two RBI double to center field.
Springfield would add three runs in the bottom of the third after Kolten Wong's leadoff double. Jermaine Curtis would bring him in with a single to center field. Curtis would score on Jamie Romak's sacrifice fly after an Oscar Tavares double down the 3rd base line moved him to third base. A wild pitch from Casey Kelly would bring Tavares in to make score 4-3 in favor of the Cards.
The Missions would tie it up in top of the fourth when Casey Kelley helped his own cause with an RBI single up the middle, after a walk and a passed ball advanced the runner. Although San Antonio managed to load the bases with one out, Martinez would escape the inning without further damage with consecutive strikeouts to Freiman and Decker.
The Cards would break the game open with a three-run bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter Ray Kruml would lead off with a double and Jermaine Curtis brought him home with an RBI single. Xavier Scruggs would pick up two RBIs on his line shot single off third baseman Rincon to push the Cardinal's lead to 7-4.
Springfield starting pitcher Carlos Martinez pitched four innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three of them earned. He walked four and struck out four Missions batters. Martinez allowed the leadoff batter to reach base in each of the four innings he pitched.
Casey Kelly got the start for the Missions and allowed five hits over five innings of four-run ball. He walked just one Cardinal and struck out seven. He struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cards bullpen proved strong, with reliever Justin Wright pitching two perfect innings with two strikeouts. Deryk Hooker (2-3) would add a perfect seventh and strike out one in earning the win. Eric Fornataro added a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts in relief. Keith Butler picked up the save, his 25th, pitching a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Springfield will conclude their three-game series with San Antonio tomorrow night at 7:08pm. The Cardinals will have Seth Maness on the mound against Josh Geer of the Missions.
