Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - Back at Hammons Field after a 4-2 road trip down in Texas, the Springfield Cardinals began a six-game homestand beginning with three against the San Antonio Missions.
The Cardinals sent lefty Tyler Lyons to the mound in search of his fourth win against right hander Josh Geer of San Antonio.
Neither team got on the board in the first, but Springfield changed that in the bottom of the second. With one out, Kyle Conley doubled and Jake Shaffer singled to put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Audry Perez singled through the middle to score two to give the Cards a 2-0 lead.
In the 3rd, Kolten Wong ripped a lead-off double to extend his hitting streak to a team high 14 games then scored on an RBI single by Oscar Taveras to give Springfield a 3-0 lead. After Chris Swauger singled, Kyle Conley launched a three-run homer to left center field to make it 6-0.
The Missions offense finally came alive in the 5th against Lyons as Reymond Fuentes doubled to lead-off the inning and scored on a one-out, two-run homer by Dean Anna. Ali Solis followed with a solo homer to bring San Antonio with three, 6-3. Lyons would toss a spotless sixth to end his outing allowing the three runs on seven hits and tied his season high with seven strikeouts.
Deryk Hooker would relieve Lyons out of the Springfield bullpen and walked the lead-off man in the 7th, but promptly induced a double play. However, Dean Anna lifted a solo homer to left field to make the score 6-4 and end Hooker's outing. Eric Fornataro entered and allowed a single a double before retiring Jake Blackwood on a ground out to end the inning.
In the 7th, Springfield looked to add some insurance to a two-run lead and got that from Kyle Conley who blasted his second homer of the game making it an 8-4 advantage. They'd tack on two more in the 8th thanks to a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Oscar Taveras to lead 10-4.
The Missions scored a run in the 9th on a sacrifice fly against Michael Blazek, but could not get any closer as Springfield doubled up San Antonio 10-5
The Redbirds will continue their series with the Missions tomorrow night at 7:08pm. Springfield will send Scott Gorgen to the mound against former St. Louis Cardinal Jason Marquis of the Missions. Every Thursday is "Buck a Brat" night at Hammons Field featuring $1 Johnsonville Bratwurst all night long.
