Springfield Cardinals News Release

Midland, TX - The Cardinals had a chance to do something Tuesday night that hadn't been done in nearly a month; win a series. After the 15-5 drubbing against Midland Monday night, Springfield sent lefty John Gast to the mound making just his second Double-A start against former big leaguer Jason Bergmann of the RockHounds.

Springfield wasted no time getting to Bergmann in the first inning as Jose Garcia led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Matt Adams RBI ground out to grab a 1-0.

The Cardinals added two more to their tally in the second on RBI singles from Charlie Cutler and Chris Swauger to bring the Springfield lead to 3-0.

John Gast walked two in the first inning, but picked off a runner and struck out the next two to get out of the inning unscathed. In the 2nd, Stephen Parker led off with a double and scored on a one out single by Jeremy Barfield to cut the Springfield lead to 3-1.

Midland would get a two-out walk in the 4th inning before Ryan Ortiz hit a high fly ball to right that Chris Swauger dropped allowing the runner to score from first base cutting the lead to just 3-2. With Ortiz at second after the error, Tyler Ladendorf doubled to left center to tie the game 3-3.

Springfield would not trail long though as Jose Garcia laid down a base-hit bunt with two outs in the 5th, stole second and scored on Ryan Jackson's RBI double into the right field corner to regain the lead, 4-3.

In the 6th, the Cardinals added another run against Bergmann on a two-out RBI infield single by Audry Perez to score Alex Castellanos to put Springfield in front by two runs.

Gast would make that lead stand up through seven innings allowing three runs, only one earned, on five hits while striking out six. The lefty retired seven straight batters and 10 of the last 11 he faced.

After a scoreless inning from Nick Greenwood in the 8th, Jorge Rondon made thing interesting again in the 9th by walking the first two batters with a two run lead. Tyler Ladendorf then struck out trying to bunt the runners over, and after Rondon uncorked a wild pitch moving the runners to second and third, Matt Sulentic struck out for the second out of the inning. Grant Green, Oakland's #1 Prospect, then grounded out to short to end the ball game with the Cardinals winning 5-3 and winning their first series since mid June.

Jose Garcia led the offense for Springfield going 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and stealing a franchise record four bases. On the night, the Cardinals stole six bases, one away from a single game record for Springfield.

The Cardinals will return home to Hammons Field Thursday, July 7th for a six-game homestand against the Frisco RoughRiders and Midland RockHounds. Shelby Miller is scheduled to start Thursday night against Carlos Pimentel of the RoughRiders at 7:07pm.

Thursday, as always, will be "Buck a Brat" Night featuring $1 Johnsonville Bratwurst all night long! Great tickets are still available by visiting the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at springfieldcardinals.com or by calling (417) 863-2143.
