Cardinals Beat Midland 2-1 in 11 Innings

Midland, TX - Springfield continued their road trip in Midland Sunday night looking to snap a three-game losing streak, their first such stretch since mid-June.

Righty Carlos Martinez got the call for the Cardinals on the mound against lefty Carlos Hernandez who snapped Springfield's seven-game winning streak last week.

Midland started the scoring in the bottom of the first as Conner Crumbliss doubled to lead-off the game and came around to score on an RBI single by Anthony Aliotti. After another single, Martinez got a double-play ground out to get out of the innings allowing just the one run.

Neither pitcher gave an inch after the 1st inning. Carlos Hernandez tossed 5.1 innings of shutout baseball before giving way to Beau Jones who followed with one and two thirds scoreless.

Carlos Martinez was equally as dominant as he allowed just the first inning run in a season high six innings of work. The righty allowed just four hits and struck out three. Jorge Rondon followed with a scoreless 7th inning of work.

Springfield's offense finally came to life in the top of the 8th inning as Greg Garcia lined a single to center with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Jermaine Curtis. With two out, Chris Swauger and Jamie Romak singled putting runners on the corners, but Jake Shaffer lined out to left to end the inning with the game tied 1-1.

Rondon ran into trouble in the bottom of the 8th as he allowed back to back with two outs to put runners on the corners. With the go-ahead run at third, Eric Fornataro came in and retired Miles Head on a fielder's choice to end the threat.

In the 9th, Springfield got a lead-off single from Xavier Scruggs and he moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, but Vance Albitz grounded to second base to keep the game tied.

Springfield threatened again in the 10th as they had runners on the corners with two out, but lacked the clutch hit keeping the game all square.

In the bottom of the 10th, Cardinals closer Keith Butler entered the game and struck out the first two batters before allowing a double to Aliotti. Miles Head was behind in the count before blasting a ball to deep left that Jake Shaffer made an outstanding running catch at the wall to take the game to the 11th inning.

Xavier Scruggs led off the top of the 11th and on the very first pitch launched a solo homer to give Springfield their first lead, 2-1.

Keith Butler retired the side in order in the bottom of the 11th to secure the win for the Cardinals to snap their three game losing skid.

Springfield will continue their three-game series in Midland tomorrow night at 6:30pm. Seth Maness will start for the Cardinals against Gary Daley of Midland.

The Cardinals will return to Hammons Field Thursday, July 12th to take on the NW Arkansas Naturals. Springfield will be giving away 2,500 Red Cardinals Tumblers thanks to Trolley's and the Flying Tomato Restaurant.
