Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

EL PASO, Texas. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains have not had a pleasant go of it in Cohen Stadium in the first half of 2009, finding different ways to lose and constantly finding their pitchers in the midst of jam after jam. Meanwhile, El Paso's pitching staff, which had a team ERA of 5.05 coming in to play Sunday night, has had the Captains' number allowing just over three earned runs per game in the first eight games against Shreveport-Bossier this season.

But in the series and 2009 season's first-half finale was a different story for the Captains and Diablos, as the Captains found a way to pull out the win in dramatic fashion, with five runs in the eighth inning and seven in the ninth to beat the Diablos 15-11.

After Shreveport-Bossier (22-26) tied the game in the eighth, the Diablos (21-27) came back with two runs on a two-out two-run double by Mike Provencher off Cunningham (3-0) in the bottom of the eighth.

Provencher, however, gave the Captains the opportunity to win, when he made two errors in the ninth inning on a grounder by Jose Torres and on a throw off a grounder by Dan Williams that could have been a game-ending double play. Dane De La Rosa (1-3) and Yury Santana then could not hold the lead, as Joe Urtuzuastegui had a two-run single to give the Captains an 11-10 lead, and Tommy Bryant hit a two-run double, Dwayne White hit an RBI single and Andres Rodriguez, who finished 4-for-5, hit an RBI double.

Justin Dowdy came on and gave up a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth to Jeff Vincent, but retired Juan Camacho swinging with a runner at first to give Shreveport-Bossier the dramatic win.
