West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
The West Michigan Whitecaps will say goodbye to the season and to their manager when they take on the Lansing Lugnuts on Monday afternoon in Lansing. The Whitecaps were defeated by the Lansing Lugnuts, 4-1, in Lansing on Sunday afternoon in their next-to-last game of the season.
Trailing 1-0 in the eighth, an RBI double from Gil Mejia tied the score at 1-1. Then in the bottom of the eighth, the Lugnuts scored three times for the victory.
'Caps starter Mike Howell was superb after giving up a home run to the Lansing leadoff hitter. Howell would then no-hit the Lugnuts before tiring in the eighth when Lansing scored the deciding runs on three singles and a walk.
Prior to the game, it was revealed that Whitecaps manager Phil Regan will retire from baseball following the 'Caps season finale on Sunday afternoon. Regan has had a career spanning six decades as a player, coach and manager at the major and minor league level.
The Whitecaps will now conclude their 2003 season when they take on the Lugnuts on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 in Oldsmobile Park. Humberto Sanchez will start on the mound in the season-ending game.
