Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - Two players named Lou were the stars on Saturday night as the Edmonton Capitals pounded the Lake County Fielders 9-1 at TELUS Field. The Caps have won all three games against the Fielders so far this series and will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon.
Caps catcher Lou Santangelo crushed a pair of opposite field home runs, while starting pitcher Lou Pote picked up the victory with an 11-strikeout performance, to lead the home team to the win. Santangelo finished the game going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Pote improved to 6-3 on the season after he scattered one run and six hits over seven innings.
All Caps centre fielder Steve Brown needed was a home run to hit for the cycle on Saturday, as he went 3-for-5 on the night with a single, a double, a triple and three runs scored. Third baseman Carlos Duncan also had a solid game with a single, a double and two RBI, while first baseman J.D. Closser scored a pair of runs.
After Pote concluded his magnificent seven-inning performance, Tom Boleska came on in relief and whiffed one Fielders batter in a hitless, scoreless eighth inning. J.J. Whetsel then came in for the ninth and also retired three straight batters including one strikeout to finish off the dominant victory.
Saturday's smashing of the Fielders wasn't just a big win on the scoreboard, as it was also important in the standings. The Chico Outlaws defeated the Calgary Vipers 10-6, meaning the 35-25 Caps are only two games back of their 38-24 provincial rivals for first place in the North American League's North Division.
The Caps, who have won four straight games, go for the sweep over the Fielders on Sunday with a 2 p.m. matinee game, which is another edition of Family Pack Sundays presented by Dental Choice and 630 CHED. Fans can purchase four tickets to the game, four hot dogs and four Pepsi for just $52. The Caps are then off to Maui for nine games before returning to Edmonton on August 12 to host Yuma.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
