Caps Kickoff Weekend with 5-2 Road Victory over Cedar Rapids

The Madison Capitols kicked off the weekend the right way tonight with a 5-2 victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Madison wasted little time getting things rolling tonight. Brendan Lamb put a puck on net from a sharp angle and was rewarded with his fifth goal of the season. Forward Connor DeTurris, who got the call up for the weekend, was credited with the helper. The Caps and RoughRiders would head into the first intermission tied at one apiece.

Madison and Cedar Rapids would battle it out for most of the 2nd period tied at 1-1. That would be the case until the captain, Casey Severo, broke the deadlock when he made a nice hustle play to knock in a loose puck out front of the Cedar Rapids net. 2:07 later, forward Jack Musa received a nice two-line pass from blueliner DJ Hart and then went in and fired a snap-shot top shelf to give the Caps a 3-1 lead.

Madison took a 3-1 lead into the final 20 minutes of regulation and began the 3rd period right where they left off. 23 seconds into the 3rd period, Luke Mittelstadt blasted home a slap shot on the power play to extend Madison's lead to 4-1. Cedar Rapids would get one back 2:19 later to pull within two for most of the rest of the game. Casey Severo put the nail in the coffin with 44 seconds left in regulation scoring an empty net goal for his second lamp lighter of the evening.

"I thought it was a pretty well-rounded game for our group," Caps bench boss Tommy Upton said. "Our special teams was solid and I thought we defended pretty well while creating some offense. It's a nice win. We'll feel good about this tonight but we have to complete our job here tomorrow."

Capitols netminder Simon Latkoczy showed out in his return between the pipes stopping 27 of the 29 shots he faced this evening. Madison's special teams had a solid night killing off both Cedar Rapids power plays while also netting a power play goal of their own.

The Caps and RoughRiders will do it all over again tomorrow tonight in the series finale from Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m.
