Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A solid opening period put the Waterloo Black Hawks on course for a 3-1 road win at Mystique Ice Center against the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday.
The Hawks opened the game with their first multigoal frame since January 7th in Sioux Falls. At 8:14, Cam VanSickle swiped a puck in the neutral zone, taking a couple of strides into the offensive end before firing a low shot past Paxton Geisel's glove. Then with 43.1 seconds remaining in the period and Waterloo on a power play, Ray Fust swooped to the side of the goal through the left circle, setting up Connor Brown for a tap in from the top of the crease.
The Saints broke through at 8:49 of the second period. Kenny Connors had control behind the Waterloo net, sending a pass to the top of the crease, where Nikita Borodayenko was waiting to bang it in.
However, Waterloo went back ahead by two at 15:06. The rebound of a Jake Schneider shot from the deep slot went high into the air above the crease. Garrett Schifsky located it as it was coming down, batting it into the net out of midair.
Waterloo held off the Saints in the third. Dubuque entered the night with the USHL's second-ranked power play, but in the final 20 minutes the Hawks denied them during two full advantages, plus half of another, which had 1:11 remaining when the period began. The Saints' last power play started with 4:23 to go, and they spent much of it skating six-on-four as Geisel was lifted for an extra attacker with just under four minutes left.
Jack Williams earned his 10th win of the season stopping 16 of 17 Dubuque shots.
The Hawks wrap up a sequence of three straight road games next Friday in Lincoln.
