Caps Host Youngstown for Weekend Matchup
March 23, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
After a three-game weekend, the Capitols are back at it again this weekend at home. Madison plays host to the Youngstown Phantoms for the last two matchups between the teams this season. On Friday, it's our Hockey Is For Everyone Night presented by Delta Beer Lab. Delta Beer Lab will be at the game sampling beers of theirs as well as hosting the 50/50 raffle along with GSFAE. It's also a $1 Beer Night, the team's eighth of the season. The following night, the Capitols are partnering with Portillo's to put on the team's annual Wiener Dog Races.
On the ice, the action should be just as fun as the off-ice promotions. Although Madison comes in with a record of 12-36-2-1 on the season, the Caps have been tremendous against Youngstown this season. Madison has taken down the Phantoms in four of the six meetings between the two teams. That includes a Madison sweep back in October as well as a pair of splits. Most recently, the Capitols split a series at the Covelli Centre in January with the Phantoms. The visitor comes into the weekend in a tie for second in the conference with the US National Team Development Program.
Capitols Interim Head Coach and General Manager Tom Gilbert had the following to say about last weekend's games:
"There were a lot of positives. Still a couple of negatives that you want to clear up. I think for us changing the culture and what we're looking for on the effort side. I think we saw a lot of good things this past weekend. I love the effort, especially the first two days. Three in threes are always tough. We had a little bit of a let down on Sunday, but with a whole week of practice, hopefully, we'll be able to build off of that."
On the ice, Madison took steps in the right direction last weekend. The youth movement continued for Madison as affiliated played Finn Brink and Colton Jamieson dressed up for the Caps in all three games. For Brink, the return to the Caps came over four months from his last game with the team. He made his impact known on Saturday night recording a goal and an assist. For Jamieson, his USHL debut came on Friday night against Cedar Rapids at home. Although they were his first USHL games, he held his own including going a +1 on Saturday night in the win over Cedar Rapids.
Gilbert praised Brink and Jamieson's play last weekend saying:
"I saw Brink earlier on in the season and knew what to expect from him. He is a very smart hockey player and understands the game. He knows how to bait guys to try to put passes through him. He was great with the puck this weekend and great on the power play, so I knew what to expect from him. For Jamieson, the games that we played against two very good teams, I really think that he held his own. There's a million things that you can develop. It's a really good league. His skating is incredible and probably saves him a lot. The defensive side is just different. A completely different pace than Minnesota high school, so there are things that he can develop still but is in a really good spot for us."
Finn Brink was not the only 2005 born player making his impact felt over the weekend. Andrew Kuzma had his best weekend to date scoring four goals over the three games. The Naperville, Illinois, native has been a point per game player since the beginning of February registering thirteen points in as many games.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm on both Friday and Saturday night. There is limited availability for Friday night's game and tickets are still available for Saturday night. You can buy your tickets at tickets.madcapshockey.com or by calling the Caps office at 608-257-2277. Coverage for this weekend's games can be found on FloHockey with live updates being provided on the Capitols social media pages.
