Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC (1W-3L-2D) fell to Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers (2W-3L-2D) 3-2 at BC Place on Saturday. The two clubs met for the 100th time in their historical Pacific Northwest rivalry, and it turned out to be a wild match featuring three penalty kicks that went to video assistant review.
The 'Caps controlled the first half, but went down 1-0. Portland's Dairon Asprilla opened the scoring after converting a penalty kick in the 42nd minute of the match after video review was consulted.
Timbers striker Jaroslaw Niezgoda then made it 2-0 for the away side in the 60th minute, scoring against the run of play on a quick counterattack.
Vanni Sartini's squad cut the lead in half at the 76th minute, after a heads up play by Javain Brown and a dangerous ball in the box by Déiber Caicedo ended with Cristian Dájome curling into the top corner of the net.
However, in a quick turn of events, Portland's Yimmi Chará gave his squad a 3-1 lead just two minutes later.
The 'Caps would not give up and pushed on in the late moments of the match. Following a penalty kick from Dájome that was saved, Caicedo earned another penalty kick in stoppage time, which Ryan Gauld converted to make it 3-2.
The Blue & White would get into the box for one final push, but could not find the tying goal as the final whistle blew at BC Place.
Up next for Whitecaps FC is an Eastern Conference clash against fellow Canadian side CF Montreal. The match will kick off on Saturday, April 16 at 12 p.m. PT live on CTV and TSN, as well as AM730 radio.
