Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals opened up a four-game home series against the Lake County Fielders on Thursday night, which was also the team's first-ever Jersey Shore Night. In a game that saw little offence and a short rain delay in the seventh inning, the home team was able to pull out a narrow 1-0 victory over their divisional rivals.

The Caps' newest pitcher Dallas Buck started on the mound and tossed a solid, scoreless three innings where he only gave up four hits. Jorge Vasquez also threw four innings for the Caps and had an impressive showing where he only surrendered one hit and accumulated six strikeouts, earning himself the win. Tom Boleska and Bartolome Fortunato also had their turn where they pitched one inning each only giving up two hits between them, as Fortunato was credited with his sixth save.

With such a strong performance from the Caps' pitchers, not much in the way of offence was needed to edge out the Fielders. The Caps only had five hits on the night, but one of them was a double by shortstop Rex Rundgren, who then scored on a fielder's choice by Vasquez and a Lake County error on the same play. Rundgren also had a single to account for two of Edmonton's five hits on the night.

Thursday's game was another Thirsty Thursday presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House, 100.3 The Bear and 104.9 Virgin Radio, featuring $3 beer. It was also Jersey Shore Night, which included contests, prizes, music and even food inspired by the popular MTV reality show. About $1,000 worth of GTL (gym, tan, laundry) prize packages were given away in different Jersey Shore themed contests throughout the night.

As a result of the slim 1-0 victory, the Caps improve to 33-25 on their 2011 season and remain three games back of the first-place 37-23 Calgary Vipers in the North American League's North Division. The four-game series against Lake County continues Friday at 7 p.m., with another evening game slated for Saturday and a 2 p.m. matinee game on tap for Sunday.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
