Caps Comeback Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to Seals

September 2, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals mounted a valiant comeback with a two-run eighth inning, but they couldn't quite avenge their early deficit, ultimately losing 4-3 to the Victoria Seals on Wednesday at TELUS Field.

The Seals opened the game with a three-run first, and added one more in the seventh, which ended up being the game-winner. The Caps closed the gap to 3-1 with a run in the fifth, and made it really close with a pair in the eighth, but they couldn't complete the comeback and fell by one.

Right fielder Tom Collaro, first baseman Cliff Brumbaugh and third baseman Alex Prieto knocked in the three Caps runs, while starter Chris Little got off to the rough start with three runs allowed in the first, but he recovered to toss 5.1 innings with four strikeouts. Catcher Matt Kavanaugh did most of the damage for the Seals, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, while starter Jeff Duda held the Caps to just one run in six innings with six strikeouts.

With the loss, the Caps (19-21) can no longer win the Golden Baseball League's North Division second-half title, since the Calgary Vipers (26-14) are too far ahead of them. But they still have a chance to make the post-season if the first-half champion Chico Outlaws (21-18) overtake Calgary and win the second half as well, and the Caps finish with a better overall record than the Vipers. Overall, the Caps trail Calgary by two games.

Thursday's final home game of the regular season is still a meaningful one for the Caps, as they take on the Seals again at 7 p.m. It's Mark Pysyk Bobblehead Night, as the first 750 fans through the gates get a bobblehead of the Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman who was selected 23rd overall by Buffalo at the 2010 NHL Draft. It's also the final 4 for $44 Thursday, as fans can purchase four tickets to the game, four hot dogs and four Pepsi for $44.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats for 2011 are now available, and fans who purchase them by Sept. 2 will received a bat autographed by the entire team. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
