Orange County Flyers News Release

WAILUKU, Hawai'i (September 1, 2010) - Manny Ayala earned his league-lead-tying 14th win of the season, combining with three relievers to pitch a shut out as the Orange County Flyers edged Na Koa Ikaika Maui, 1-0, in Wednesday at Iron Maehara Stadium. The win put Orange County back in first place of the South Division second-half standings.

Ayala (14-0) overcame a season-high six walks in six and a third innings of work, allowing four hits while striking out six in the win. After walking the bases loaded with one out in the first inning, he retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.

Maui had a chance to tie the game in the ninth inning after Travon Jackson singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a pickoff throw to first base that got away and into foul territory. Andre Simpson was able to record three outs with the tying run 90-feet from home for his 14th save of the season.

Orange County forced Maui starter Steve Spurgeon from the game when Sergio Pedroza lined a base hit off his arm. Spurgeon had shut out the Flyers through three innings before Gregorio Martinez took over for a scoreless fourth inning.

Steve Boggs singled to lead off the fifth inning, advanced to second on a Tyler Keeble single and two batters later scored on a Pedroza ground out, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead. The Flyers would get only one more base runner after the fifth inning, but the bullpen held the lead for the win.

Former Major Leaguer Matt Riley took over for Ayala with one out in the seventh inning. Bryan Harris tossed a scoreless eighth, getting an inning-ending double-play to halt Maui's scoring chance with runners on first and second with one out.

The Orange County Flyers (50-31, 28-8 second half) begin a best-of-five playoff series against Na Koa Ikaika Maui (52-25, 26-8) in Maui on Tuesday, September 7, and will host Game 3 of the series on Friday, September 10 at 7:05pm at Goodwin Field. OC will host Games 4 and 5, if necessary, on September 11 and 12.

The Flyers continue this seven-game series to wrap up the regular season in Maui on Friday, with first pitch at 9:35pm Pacific Time, 6:35pm Hawaiian Time. All games from Maui can be heard live through Live365 with Josh Feldman through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
