USHL Madison Capitols

Caps Battle, Fall 3-1 to Youngstown

March 25, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release

Madison looked for a response from a 6-1 loss the night prior on Saturday as they finished up the season series with the Youngstown Phantoms. With play earlier in the season, Madison made sure that at worst the two teams would walk away all square at four games aside. The Caps with a win would win the season series with the Phantoms.

Early on, the Capitols looked to make sure they came away with the season series striking first with a Brendan Lamb goal. Slava Tugolukov picked up his first career USHL point on the play as well. Madison held the lead until back-to-back power plays for the Phantoms allowed them to strike for their first of the night to even things at one.

In the second, the score column sat vacant for all but one goal from the visitor. There was plenty of action, though, with penalties resulting in power plays on both sides. This included a game misconduct on one of Youngstown's defenders late in the third, which the power play would be primarily held in the third period.

The Capitols power play was tamed by the Phantoms penalty kill, which stopped Madison from establishing possession in the offensive zone. The game went down to the wire with the Phantoms burying an empty-netter to decide it.

Madison falls to 12-38-2-1 on the season. The Caps return home next weekend to face off against Cedar Rapids on Saturday and the USNTDP U-17 squad on Sunday.
