Capitols snap losing streak with overtime win
MADISON, WI - Defenseman Jared Kucharek potted home the overtime game-winning goal to give the Madison Capitols a 3-2 victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Wednesday night.
Madison (16-17-1-2) is ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference with 35 points. Dubuque (17-13-6-1) is tied for second place in the Eastern Conference with 41 points.
Kucharek carried the puck coast-to-coast before snapping a wrist shot past goaltender Cole Weaver's glove for the game-winning goal at 3:56 of overtime.
Left wing Mick Messner lit the lamp with a power play goal at 10:59 of the first period to give the Capitols a 1-0 lead. Forward Kamil Sadlocha fed the puck to Messner as they entered Dubuque's zone. They played catch for a bit before Messner fired a shot on net from the left face-off circle. The initial shot was saved by Weaver, but Messner buried his own rebound for his 10th goal of the season.
The Fighting Saints evened the game at 15:02 of the opening frame with right wing Tyce Thompson's fourth tally of the season. Defenseman Brendan Bushy grabbed the puck in the neutral zone and pushed it up to left wing Scott Corbett who carried it into Capitols territory. Corbett dropped the puck back to Thompson who was coming into the right point for the one-timer that beat goaltender Dryden McKay to tie the game at 1-1.
Madison regained their lead with center Michael Mancinelli's 10th goal of the season at 5:11 of the middle frame. Kucharek chipped the puck out of the Capitols zone and sprung left wing Brendan Walkom down the left wing. Walkom grabbed the puck in the left face-off circle and centered it for Mancinelli for the one-timer and a 2-1 advantage.
Center Jan Kern evened the game back up with his seventh goal of the season for Dubuque. Corbett chipped the puck in the air toward the net and Kern knocked it over the goal line at 10:37 of the second stanza to bring the game to 2-2.
Mckay (15-12-1-2) earned his 12th win of the season with 37 saves on 39 shots. Weaver (9-7-3-0) took his third overtime loss of the season as he stopped 26-of-29 shots.
Madison went 1-for-4 on the power play. Dubuque was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Notables: Madison snapped a four-game losing streak (0-3-1-0)...Left wing Mick Messner and center Michael Mancinelli both netted their 10th goals of the season...Defenseman Jared Kucharek has three points (2-1=3) in his last two games.
