Capitols Select 17 in Phase II Draft

Middleton, WI - The Madison Capitols completed their 2020 USHL Phase II Draft on Tuesday evening, setting the stage with tons of great roster options. The selections included nine forwards, six defensemen, and two goaltenders who will compete for roster spots on this year's team.

"Another great job by Will Craig and our staff in today's Phase II Draft," says head coach Tom Upton. "I thought that we addressed some of our needs in our lineup early on in the draft, and we filled some holes with younger players as the draft went on. I'm excited to watch this group play at training camp this summer. We have very good depth, and the competition will be high. Through that competition, we will decide who is best suited to help us create our winning culture in the locker room and help us win hockey games on the ice."

With the first overall pick in the draft, the Capitols selected defenseman Owen Gallatin out of Hugo, Minnesota. The University of Minnesota - Duluth commit spent the last two seasons playing for the US National Team Development Program, posting 46 points (7g + 39a = 46p) over the course of 156 games.

"I am very happy and excited to have been selected by Coach Upton and the Madison Capitols organization," says Gallatin. "I am really looking forward to the upcoming season and being a part of this organization, the community, and of course, helping the Capitols this season."

In the 2nd round, Cade Penney was selected as a right-handed defenseman out of Thornton, Pennsylvania. The 6-foot, 165-pound defenseman played last season with the New Jersey Junior Titans in the NAHL, posting six goals and adding 24 assists in 51 games.

3rd Round (46th pick) - Daniyal Dzhaniyev joins USNTDP teammate, Owen Gallatin, as one of the Capitols 2020 draft picks. The Penn State commit posted 19 goals along with 17 assists in 147 games over the past two seasons for the program as a forward.

4th Round (47th pick) - Timofei Khokhlachev spent last season in the NAHL with the Shreveport Mudbugs. Over parts of two seasons, the 6-foot-4, 209-pound Russian forward tallied 18 goals and 23 assists in 83 games. Khokhalchev committed to American International College this past February.

5th Round (63rd pick) - Simon Labelle is picked as the first Canadian draft pick of the year. Hailing from Ottawa, Ontario, the forward accumulated 88 points (39g + 49a = 88p) in 102 games over the course of two of two seasons with the Rockland Nationals. Labelle's skill earned him a commitment to Colgate University.

6th Round (78th pick) - The first goaltender drafted for Madison this year, Gustave Bylin comes to Madison via the Selects Academy. The 6-foot-4 netminder is listed as the #18 North American goaltender in this year's NHL Draft.

7th Round (93rd pick) - Hunter Longhi was selected by way of the Springfield Jr. Blues where he tallied 12 goals along with 18 assists in 46 games last season. The Collinsville, Illinois native committed to Harvard University in March.

8th Round (108th pick) - Carson Walters was the first 2004 birth year drafted in the Phase II draft, and comes with high expectations. The Chicago Mission forward posted 16 points (8g + 8a) in 14 registered games last season. Walters is also a 13th round pick in the OHL draft.

10th Round (138th pick) - Mikael Huchette becomes the second Canadian draft pick for the Capitols this season. The 6-foot-2 forward is committed to Maine University after accumulating 35 goals along with 35 assists in 80 games over the course of the last two seasons.

11th Round (153rd pick) - James Jurcev comes in as the biggest draft pick, listed at 6-foot-5, out of Palos Heights, Illinois. The right-handed defenseman posted 40 points in 73 games last season for Team Illinois.

12th Round (168th pick) - Daniel Nekhamiyev hails from Marlboro, New Jersey, but played for Compuware last season. The 6-foot, 170-pound forward has posted some numbers with skill and speed he's put to the test.

13th Round (183rd pick) - Jacob Badal comes in with two years of junior experience in time split between Wilkes-Barre in the NAHL, and the Powell River Kings in the BCHL. Badal has had some success, posting 62 points in 108 games between the last two seasons, earning a commit to Western Michigan in the process.

14th Round (198th pick) - Jake Manfre comes into Madison from Kings Park, NY where he tallied 13 goals with 14 assists last season in 14 games for the Long Island Gulls. Manfre and the Gulls were AYHL 16U Premiere Champions.

15th Round (213th pick) - Marino Ramirez hails from Lemont, Illinois just outside of Chicago, playing the last three years at Shattuck St. Mary's. Ramirez comes in as the second goaltender in the Capitols draft this season.

16th Round (228th pick) - Maveric Lamoureaux becomes the 3rd Canadian drafted to the Capitols this season. The 6-foot-4 defenseman hails from Laval, Quebec, putting up 14 points (2g +12a =14p) in 38 games for the Jonquière Élites last season.

17th Round (243rd pick) - Alvin Buholzer is the long homegrown talents selected by Madison this year. Buholzer comes up from Monroe, Wisconsin, but has played for the Capitols AAA program for a while. The right-handed defenseman is hoping to break through and show his talent.
