Madison Capitols News Release
Middleton, WI. - Madison Capitols President Andrew Joudrey announced today that Head Coach and General Manager Corey Leivermann, Associate Head Coach Gaven Bickford, and Assistant Coach Ross Kovacs have been relieved of their coaching duties.
Tom Gilbert, Director of Player Development for the Capitols, will assume head coaching duties on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2022-23 season. Dominic Zombo, Madison Capitols U18 AAA Head Coach, has been added as an assistant coach for the remainder of the 2022-23 season. Ryan Galt, assistant coach with the Madison Capitols U18 AAA team, will also serve as an assistant coach on an interim basis.
Gilbert is in his first season with the Capitols. After being selected in the fourth round draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2002, he went on to spend ten seasons in the NHL, totaling 45-178-223 in 655 NHL games for the Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles Kings and Montreal Canadiens. Prior to the NHL, Gilbert attended the University of Wisconsin, where he won a National Championship for the Badgers in 2005-2006 and was an All-American that same year.
Zombo is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Omaha hockey program, where he served as team captain his senior year and amassed 36-50-86 in 137 career NCAA games. Upon graduation, Zombo played four years of professional hockey in the East Coast Hockey League where he scored 26-55-81 in 250 games. After his retirement, Zombo entered the coaching ranks, working with the Green Bay Gamblers AAA program for two years, before joining the Madison Capitols AAA organization in 2022.
"This is a very difficult decision to make," Joudrey said. "Corey is a quality person, has worked hard, and is a good hockey coach. We thank him, Gaven, and Ross for their dedication and service to the Capitols organization. However, we feel it is necessary for this change to be made in order for our organization to get pointed back in the right direction. The development of our players is our number one priority, and we believe a new voice is needed to ensure our players develop to the utmost of their ability."
After reaching the Clark Cup Finals last season, the Capitols have struggled during the 2022-23 campaign. The Capitols are currently in last place in the USHL standings with an 11-34-2-1 (.260) record in 48 games this season, are 5-16-1-1 on home-ice and 2-7-1-0 in their last 10 games.
"This is not a happy day for us, but we are committed to developing our players and getting our organization back to a Clark Cup contending caliber of hockey. We welcome the challenge of working with this group of players to finish this season on a strong note and diligently prepare for the 2023-24 season," Joudrey added.
Leivermann served as Associate Head Coach under Tom Upton for the last two seasons, prior to being named Head Coach and General Manager in June 2022 when Upton departed for a position with the University of Massachusetts. Leivermann had spent the previous 3 seasons with the Janesville Jets organization, as an Assistant Coach for 1 season, before being promoted to Head Coach for the end of the 2018-19 season and the entirety of the 2019-20 campaign.
The Capitols will host the Cedar Rapids Roughriders Friday night at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:05 pm.
