Madison Capitols News Release
MADISON, WI - The Madison Capitols, a member of the United States Hockey League, have partnered with University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center for the third annual Cross-Check Cancer event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research in Madison when the team hosts the Fargo Force at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, President Andrew Joudrey announced on Monday.
The Capitols players will wear specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off with a portion of the proceeds benefitting UW Carbone Cancer Center, along with a portion of the ticket sales from the game.
"Cancer affects everyone, and it's an honor to bring the community together to honor and remember those who have battled this deadly disease," explained Joudrey. "UW Carbone Cancer Center is doing revolutionary cancer research and we are proud to partner with them for this game and to help raise awareness."
The Capitols will honor survivors with a pregame puck drop, and UW Carbone Director Howard Bailey, MD will speak to the crowd that night.
"We strongly believe in the value of what we do and the value of what we bring to our patients, to our communities and to Wisconsin," said Bailey.
UW Carbone Cancer Center is Wisconsin's only National Cancer Institute - (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The NCI rigorously reviews cancer centers every five years, and UW Carbone Cancer Center's most recent review proved that the center has retained their status for another five years.
"We were unanimously voted as 'Outstanding,'" Bailey said. "NCI does not provide rankings of cancer centers' scores, but based on my years as a reviewer in the past, only a few centers receive that score or better.
'In nearly every metric that measures the value of a cancer center, we are getting stronger," Bailey said. "And many of our research and care programs received the highest possible rating."
A majority of the Capitols team including President Andrew Joudrey and Head Coach Garrett Suter will shave their heads in the lobby following Saturday's game, courtesy of The Barbershop. Fans who donate for the team to have their heads shaved will be entered to win a prize pack that includes four Eagle's Nest All You Can Eat tickets, four Capitols pint glasses, and 16 Chuck-A-Pucks. Fans interested in having their heads shaved at the game in support of cancer research can do so at The Barbershop table in the lobby that night.
Fans can also purchase the Hurts Donuts deal, which includes one ticket to Saturday's game, a Hurts Donut at the game, and a donation to UW Carbone Cancer Center.
The Capitols host the Force for Cross-Check Cancer at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. For ticket information, call the Capitols at (608) 257-CAPS or visit us online at www.MADCAPSHOCKEY.com.
