Capitols Open 3-In-3 on Home Ice against Chicago

October 23, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (4-2-0) will look to extend its winning streak to a franchise record five games when they host the Chicago Steel (3-4-0) on Friday at the Alliant Energy Center.

Coverage of the game can be heard on 106.7 FM, 1670 AM, The Zone in Madison, online at www.madcitysportszone.com and on connected devices through the TuneIn radio app.

The Steel got the better of Madison in the 2014-15 campaign, winning five of the six matchups and holding Madison to one or two goals in five of those matchups. However, Chicago lost its top five scorers from that season series to NCAA play.

Madison has located its offense in a big way in their last four games, winning all four while outscoring their opponents 20-7 in that time. The Capitols' goaltending duo of Garrett Metcalf and Ryan Edquist has combined to stop 110 of the last 113 pucks that have been fired their way.

Perhaps most impressively, the Capitols are tied for the league lead in goals (27) and are leading the league in goals per game (4.5) while taking the fourth-fewest shots on goal in the USHL, with just 168. The resulting 16.1% shot success rate is the highest among the 17 USHL clubs.

The Capitols continue to rely on a steady and balanced scoring presence. Five different Madison forwards (Lohin, McLellan, McCormick, Leclerc, Egle) have averaged a point per game or more, while four different Capitols (Leclerc, McLellan, McElhenie, Payusov) have registered multi-goal games already in 2015-16. Payusov picked up the first hat trick for Madison since Charlie Gerard recorded the first in team history last February in Chicago.

One of the league's most balanced offenses will go toe to toe against a Chicago group that features the USHL's leading goal scorer, Jake Jaremko (eight goals in seven games, including five power play markers), as well as the leading assist man league-wide, Tanner Laczynski (eight assists in seven games). Those two Steel forwards have combined for 19 points, while no other Steel player has topped five points through seven contests.

Between the pipes, Chicago also boasts an NHL Draft pick in Czech-born Daniel Vladar. A third round pick of the Boston Bruins in the 2015 Draft, Vladar has had a strong beginning to his USHL career, stopping 91 of 100 shots in four games. The hard-luck goalie only has a 1-2 record to show for his 2.48 goals against average.

In a year of anomalies for the Steel, perhaps no figure is more confusing than their winning margin. Chicago has won its three contests by margins of four, five, and five goals respectively. Meanwhile, in its four losses, Chicago has scored only five goals while losing two games by two or fewer goals.

Both the Steel and the Capitols will play three games in three nights. After their meeting Friday, Chicago will visit Green Bay while Madison will host Bloomington. The Steel and Capitols will renew acquaintances on Sunday for a 4 p.m. matinee at the Alliant Energy Center.
