Capitols Host Youngstown, Travel to Chicago in Three Game Weekend
Published on February 15, 2024 under United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
The Capitols are set to host the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday and Saturday for what forecasts to be one of the biggest weekends this season both on and off the ice. Off the ice, the team is expecting its largest crowds of the season with a sell out on Friday night to be followed by another huge crowd on Saturday. Fans both nights are encouraged to show up early, but with the bobblehead giveaway on Saturday, fans wanting the giveaway need to be one of the first 1,000 people in attendance. Doors will open at 6:00 pm on both nights.
On the ice, Madison is in need of snapping a six-game losing skid as the team is in danger of being outside the playoff picture for the first time all season. The Capitols are just two points ahead of seventh placed Cedar Rapids and one ahead of Chicago in sixth. If the Capitols are looking to host a first-round series, they'll have to gain ten points of ground back from Youngstown. Needless to say, a weekend series with the Phantoms could create a 14-point hole or bring the Caps within six points of the visitors.
Madison is set to face off with Youngstown for the third and fourth times this season. The first two matchups both came back in October with the two teams splitting the games, each winning on the road. The teams will play six times this season with the final two meetings coming at the Covelli Centre in late March.
Following the pair of home games, the Capitols will hit the road to Chicago on Sunday for a matinee in Geneva. Chicago has been red hot, collecting points in eight of their last ten games, and the Steel, as previously mentioned, have brought themselves within one point of Madison in the Eastern Conference standings.
Chicago won the most recent matchup with the Caps last Friday night by a score of 4-1. On the season, Madison is 3-3-1-0 against the Steel and can win the series, points wise, between the two teams on Sunday afternoon with a regulation win. Chicago has already clinched at least a tie on the win-loss record side of things.
The Capitols will get James Hong back this weekend after he played with the Korean National Team in the Pre-Olympic Qualifying Round Three in Poland. Although his team failed to qualify for the next round, Hong recorded four points in three games including a two-goal performance in the team's final game against the host, Poland. Korea finished second in Group J behind Ukraine.
If and when he dresses in two games, Max Nagel will cross the 100 games played threshold. Nagel has exploded offensively this season with 32 points in 36 games with the Capitols, which puts him second on the team in scoring.
Puck drop on Friday and Saturday is set for 7:05 pm with Sunday's road puck drop set for 3:05 pm in Chicago. Tickets for Saturday's game are still available at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
If you can't make it out to the games this weekend, coverage can be found at FloHockey and on Caps Radio on YouTube on Friday and Saturday.
