Madison Capitols News Release

The Capitols drop just their third game of the season after falling 6-4 to the Youngstown Phantoms in tonight's road series opener.

The Caps faced maybe their first truly frustrating game of the season. Despite them battling all night long, it seemed as if the Phantoms had an answer for every goal the Capitols scored.

Nick DeSantis buried his sixth goal of the season 48 seconds into the 2nd period. The goal came just 24 seconds into a man advantage opportunity. Trailing 3-1, Kyle Kukkonen ripped a one-timer home from the slot to cut the Phantoms lead in half. Capitols forward, Casey Severo made his season debut tonight after starting the season on the IR. Severo registered the primary assist on Kukkonen's goal. With 47 seconds left in the 2nd frame, Capitols forward Quinn Finley netted his first of two goals tonight to make it a 4-3 contest in favor of Youngstown.

4-3 is where things would remain until the 12:58 mark of the 3rd period. Finley scored the Capitols second power play goal of the evening to equalize things at 4-4. However, 31 seconds later the Phantoms broke loose and scored on a breakaway to take a late 5-4 lead on the Caps.

"We got out-competed for 20 minutes and it cost us the game. We failed to accomplish our mission tonight and play to our identity for 60 minutes against a very hard working Youngstown team," Capitols head coach Tom Upton said. "I expect a full 60 minute response from our team tomorrow "

The Caps and Phantoms will do it all again tomorrow night for another 7:05 p.m. ET puck drop in the series finale.
