Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Ralston, NE - The Sioux Falls Stampede fell behind 3-0 just eight minutes into the first period, but rallied for two goals of their own to pull within one before ultimately falling late in the third, 5-2 to the Omaha Lancers Friday night. Clint Levens and Cal Thomas both tallied their first goals of the season in the loss to the Herd who fell to 4-8-0 on the season. Isak Posch started the game put saw three goals go in on four shots before being relieved by Noah Grannan who stopped 20 of 21 shots.
The start of the game did not go as planned for the Herd who saw some sharp shooting from the Lancers early and often in the game. Ryan Gillespie beat out an icing call and sent a pass to Alex Bump who quickly wristed a shot home for a 1-0 lead just 1:21 in. The Lancers made it 2-0 just 42 seconds later when Ethan Elias fired a shot from the right circle and just past the glove of Isak Posch. Omaha added to their lead at 8:03 when Michael Cameron blasted a shot from inside the left circle and into the upper right-hand corner of the net for a 3-0 advantage.
Looking to provide a spark for the Herd, Grannan would come in between the pipes. Sioux Falls would break through at 9:43 when Clint Levens deflected a shot from Jack Reimann for his first career USHL goal. Minutes later the Herd would find themselves with a 5-on-3 advantage and they would cash in. Cal Thomas took a pass in the high slot from Garrett Pinoniemi and blasted it past Omaha goaltender Kevin Pasche to make it a one-goal game. Sioux Falls outshot the Lancers 8-6 in the period.
After a scoreless second period in which Omaha outshot the Herd 14-7, it still remained close throughout the third. Just as the Stampede were looking to make a final push, an unfortunate turnover would result in Omaha's fourth goal. A pass in front of the Stampede net went off the skate of Matt Romer and right onto the stick of Owen Fowler who quickly wristed the puck under the crossbar to make it a 4-2 game at 16:23. The Herd would pull Grannan for an extra attacker, but couldn't establish anything in the offensive zone and the Lancers would seal it with an empty netter to take the game by a final of 5-2.
Omaha and Sioux Falls both tallied eight shots in the third period, but the Lancers outshot the Stampede 28-23 on the night. The Herd went 1-for-4 on the power play and were 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Herd will get another chance at Omaha when they host the Lancers Saturday night. Puck drop is 6:05 PM inside the PREMIER Center and tickets are still available through the KELOLAND Box Office or any Ticketmaster location. The Stampede office will be open 12-3 PM Saturday for any ticketing needs.
