Madison Capitols News Release
Middleton, WI - A barrage of 3rd period goals proved to be the difference in a dominating 6-1 win for the Madison Capitols on Friday night at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena. With the win, Madison picked up their second straight victory over the US National Team Development Program.
The Westbury Power Play went to work on the second attempt of the night for Madison, and it came in handy as Jack Horbach netted his 3rd goal of the season following assists from Carson Bantle and Stepan Pokorny. The goal gave the Capitols the lead over the U18 squad for the first time this season.
Patrick Schmiedlin followed up Horbach's goal with his 6th mark of the season after another combo assist that included Bantle and Ryan Kirwan. The goal came just under six minutes later to double the lead.
Late in the period, things starting to get physical, leading to a 5-on-3 power play for Team USA, where Jacob Truscott lined up on the back door to beat a diving Christian Stoever to cut the deficit in half to finish the 2nd period.
That was the last time Stoever would get beat, as his offense turned up the intensity in the 3rd period. Jan Stibingr netted his 2nd goal of the year before Ryan Kirwan, Brock Baker, and Thomas Weis added three more to close out the game in grand fashion.
Stoever turned back 46 of 47 shots in the contest, while Carson Bantle was the big winner offensively with the first five assist game in Capitols history. With Kirwan's goal, he also moves into a 2nd place tie all time with Sam McCormick for goals in a single season.
The Capitols return to action Saturday night as they finish off the season series against Team USA at 6:05pm. It's Madison's 2nd annual STEM N Star Wars Night presented by Alliant Energy and Westbury Bank. The Capitols have teamed up with Madison Reading Project to keep kids reading in the Madison area. The team will be accepting "like new" book donations at the game as well.
