Portland Pirates News Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Washington Capitals, the National Hockey League affiliate of the Portland Pirates, signed free agent left wing Andrej Podkonicky and right wing Garret Stroshein to a one-year contract and a two-year contract, respectively, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Podkonicky, 25, has spent the past two seasons playing in Finland, Slovakia and Germany. Last season with Iserlohn of the German Hockey League, the 6' 2", 202-pound Slovakia native recorded 18 goals and 15 assists in 52 games. During 2001-02 he split the season between HIFK Helsinki in Finland and Bratislava in his native Slovakia.
Originally selected by St. Louis 196th overall in the 1996 Entry Draft, Podkonicky began his North American career with the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League. During the 1997-98 season, his second with Portland, he helped the team to a Memorial Cup championship while earning the Chynoweth Award as the Memorial Cup Tournament's leading scorer and a place on the Memorial Cup All-Star Team.
Following his major-junior career, Podkonicky played two-and-a-half seasons for Worcester of the American Hockey League, recording 37 goals and 52 assists in 154 games, before being dealt from St. Louis to Florida in exchange for Eric Boguniecki on Dec.17, 2000. Following the trade, he made his NHL debut, appearing in six games and recording a goal for the Panthers before being assigned to Louisville of the AHL.
Stroshein, 23, appeared in 28 games with the Pirates last season, recording an assist and 86 penalty minutes, and two games for Richmond of the East Coast Hockey League, collecting seven penalty minutes. Prior to last season, the 6' 7", 245-pound, Edmonton native spent the previous three seasons in the ECHL and the West Coast Hockey League.
