AHL announces award winners

SPRINGFIELD, MA ... American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced the awarding of three annual honors for excellence and service to the league. The announcements came at the conclusion of the league's annual Board of Governors meeting on Hilton Head Island, S.C. last week.

Jeff Barrett, president of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, has been named the 2002-03 recipient of the James C. Hendy Award, given annually to the Executive of the Year in the AHL. Under his direction and leadership, the Penguins have been built into one of the league's model franchises, with success on the ice and outstanding community visibility throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. In four short years, the Pens have hosted an AHL All-Star Classic and the Calder Cup Finals, and enter the 2003-04 season having sold out each of their last 100 home games at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza.

Bill Watters has been honored with the Thomas Ebright Award in recognition of career contributions to the AHL. In his senior management position with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1991-2003, Watters also served as general manager and governor of the AHL's St. John's Maple Leafs, playing a significant role in the development of Mile One Stadium and in the successful operation of the St. John's franchise. He was a member of the AHL's executive committee for 10 years, including one year as its chairman.

Linesman Marty Demers has been named the winner of the Michael Condon Memorial Award for outstanding contributions by an on-ice official. Demers has served the AHL as a top official for the last 24 years, overcoming two major injuries in the last three seasons. Continuing the league's long tradition of developing young officials for the future, Demers has played a major role throughout his career in contributing to the advancement of many of today's NHL on-ice officials who graduated from the AHL ranks.

The James C. Hendy Award is named for the late Jim Hendy, a Hockey Hall of Famer and long-time statistician and historian for the AHL who won four Calder Cups as general manager of the original Cleveland Barons. The Thomas Ebright Award honors Tom Ebright, the former owner and governor of the Baltimore Skipjacks and Portland Pirates who passed away in 1997. The Michael Condon Memorial Award was instituted in 2002 following the sudden passing of veteran linesman Mike Condon.
