Capitales Take Both Ends of Doubleheader

June 11, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Quebec Capitales grabbed a 7-2 victory in Game One and held off the Tornadoes in a dramatic 5-4 victory in Game Two that went down to the final pitch at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Rene Leveret went 5-for-8 with six RBI, two runs scored and two huge, two-run home runs to lead the Capitales. The first baseman/designated hitter drove in four RBI in Game One to pace the Capitales, before putting his team ahead for the first time in Game Two with a moonshot to left field in the fifth inning to give Quebec a 3-2 lead.

Chris Torres and Jerod Edmondson each had big days for the Tornadoes, despite dropping both ends of the doubleheader. Torres started both games at catcher swatting two solo home runs, while Edmondson smashed two doubles and went 3-for-7 with a run and an RBI.

Quebec jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game One on a Leveret RBI single and a Josue Peley sacrifice fly. The runs would prove to be the final runs Tornadoes starter Kyle Regnault would allow in his first start of the season. The lefty reliever took the loss despite allowing just two runs, two earned over four innings and walking five.

The Tornadoes responded in the bottom half of the inning right away. Cameron Monger was hit by a pitch leading off and Jerod Edmondson doubled to right field with one out to put runners on second and third for Jose Canseco. On the fourth pitch of his at-bat, Canseco grounded a ball to the shortstop to plate Monger, but Edmondson was erased heading to third.

The game would stay scoreless through the fourth, before Quebec jumped all over the Tornadoes bullpen. Quebec scored two runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to take Worcester out of the game.

Torres hit his solo shot in the bottom of the fifth off of the winning pitcher Chad Jones, but 4-2 would be the closest the Tornadoes would get the rest of the way in Game One.

Game Two had a far different start, with the Tornadoes jumping out to a 2-0 lead off Karl Gelinas (5-0). Monger led off with a single and came into score on Edmondson's second of three doubles on the day. Canseco followed with a single to center to score Edmondson and give Worcester a 2-0 lead.

Once again the opening few innings would prove quiet after the first, as Zach Zuercher and Gelinas went back and forth putting up scoreless innings. Zuercher pitched a complete game allowing just seven hits, one walk and one earned run, but took the loss. Gelinas got the win, despite allowing 10 hits and four earned runs.

The difference in Game Two proved to be the fifth inning when Quebec plated four unearned runs. After errors by Johnny Welch and Tony Patane allowed two of the first three batters to reach base, Sebastien Boucher cut the deficit to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly. Leveret followed with a powerful home run to left field to make it 3-1 and Peley made it back-to-back home runs with a blast just over the left field fence.

Worcester got one run back in the fifth when Monger (3-for-4, 2 runs) led off with a double in the bottom of the fifth and scored on a Brandon Pinckney single. Torres tied it in the sixth with a home run to right center and the Tornadoes were right back in it.

But the seventh inning wasn't kind to Worcester. Jeff Helps led off with a single off of Nick Salotti's glove and Sebastien Boucher plated him two batters later with a single up the middle.

Edmondson led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the first base line that just stayed fair. Canseco followed with a deep fly ball to right field that easily moved Edmondson over but it wouldn't be enough. Johnny Welch struck out with Edmondson on third and out out and Nick Salotti was called for a third strike swinging as he tried to avoid swinging.

Worcester and Quebec will play another doubleheader Tuesday, with the teams squaring off for a split admission doubleheader at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. The two teams will close out their six-game set with single games on Wednesday (7:05 p.m.) and Thursday (11:05 a.m.).
