Capacity Crowd Witnesses Hendricks' Near No-No

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, nearly had deja vu Thursday night, watching Kyle Hendricks no-hit the Wilmington Blue Rocks through seven-and-a-third innings exactly two months to the day after Nick Tepesch and Jimmy Reyes did no-hit the Blue Crew in Delaware. The Pelicans ace wound up allowing one hit in a 2-1 win in front of a standing room only capacity crowd of 6,599 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Tossing his Minor League leading 15th quality start, Hendricks carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before he walked Lane Adams. The outfielder was the last Blue Rock to reach base until the eighth, when pushing 100 pitches, Hendricks walked Brett Eibner. Murray Watts then ended Hendricks' historic bid, doubling off the wall on a 1-2 pitch, the sixth of his at-bat. The hit ended Hendricks' night and the no-no bid.
The hit for Watts was only enough to end the no-hitter, however, not to win the game. Myrtle Beach got all the offense it needed in the fifth inning. After a one out walk to Edwin Garcia, Santiago Chirino launched his fourth homerun to leftfield. It made the game 2-0, enough for Hendricks.
The Pelicans right hander picked up the win, his fifth. Jason Adam took the hard luck loss for Wilmington, allowing only two hits and falling to 2-10 in his seven strong. Joe Van Meter earned his third save as the Birds' lone reliever.
With the win the Pelicans also swept the Blue Rocks in four games, the first time the Pelicans have swept two four game sets in the same season since 2008.
Myrtle Beach now travels to Potomac to take on the Nationals at 7:05 Friday. Randy Henry starts against Alex Meyer, who is making his Carolina League debut.
