Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC - The tough-luck tale of Jason Adam continues. And a familiar refrain popped into the picture on the story's latest telling. On a night he made one mistake, he also got one run of support as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (54-53, 18-9) continued their second-half surge with a 2-1 win and a four-game sweep of the Wilmington Blue Rocks (41-56, 12-15). The Rocks concluded their schedule at Pelicans Ballpark with a 2-8 mark on the year.
Adam (2-10) had allowed a pair of two-out baserunners on a bruise and a single through four innings of work. Then came the fifth when he followed a four-pitch walk of Edwin Garcia by giving up his league-worst 15th home run of the year to the light-hitting Santiago Chirino. The two-run poke got over the short porch in left field for a 2-0 deficit, one the Rocks would not overcome.
In fact, Adam's counterpart Kyle Hendricks was perfect into the fifth and carried a no-hitter into the eighth. In similar fashion to Adam's lone weak moment, a walk set the stage for Hendricks' rare foible. He walked Brett Eibner with one out in the eighth before Murray Watts bashed a double to center for Wilmington's first lead of the night. Watts' liner chased Hendricks (5-8) in favor of Joe Van Meter who struck out one over 1.2 perfect innings for his third save.
The Blue Rocks' seven-game road trip now shifts to Salem, VA for a three-game set against the Red Sox. Elisaul Pimentel (1-1, 5.06) gets the ball in the opener for the Blue Crew against fellow righty Keith Couch (6-7, 4.35) at 7:05 p.m. Broadcast coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
