Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC - Russ Canzler drove home the game-winning run with an RBI single in the eighth inning to give the Bulls a 4-3 victory over the Gwinnett Braves on Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The win gives the Bulls a 3.5 game lead in the South Division with six games to play.

Dan Johnson got the offense going for the Bulls in the first inning when he singled home Justin Ruggiano to tie the game at one. After Gwinnett took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning the Bulls offense got going again in the bottom of the third. Ruggiano reached on a fielding error by Braves first baseman Wes Helms that allowed both Tim Beckham and Brandon Guyer to score and give the Bulls a 3-2 lead.

The Braves tied the game again in the sixth inning when Wilking Castillo grounded out with runners on second and third to score Stefan Gartrell. Tim Beckham led off the eighth inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Anthony Varvaro then intentionally walked the 2010 International League MVP Dan Johnson, in order to get to the newly crowned 2011 league MVP Canzler. Canzler delivered a single over the head of Braves second baseman Ruben Gotay to give the Bulls a 4-3 lead.

The Bulls bullpen was brilliant throwing seven innings and allowing just five hits and one run while striking out seven. Dane De La Rosa (6-5) worked the seventh and eighth innings allowing only one hit and striking out the side in the eighth. Rob Delaney worked around a one out single by Wilkin Ramirez to earn his 12th save of the season. Delaney has now converted seven consecutive save opportunities.

Durham will begin their final road trip of the regular season on Wednesday August 31, when they begin a two-game series with the Charlotte Knights. The Bulls will send Andy Sonnanstine (3-5) to the mound against the Knights Dylan Axelrod (6-1). The game can be heard on 620 the Buzz.
