Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The International League today announced that Gwinnett Braves starting pitcher Julio Teheran has won two league honors, taking home both the league's Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Pitcher awards for the 2011 season. Additionally, Gwinnett Braves OF/DH Stefan Gartrell, a 2011 IL All Star and winner of the 2011 Triple-A Home Run Derby, was named to the league's Postseason All-Star Team.
The Cartagena, Colombia-native has spent much of the year leading the league in a variety of pitching categories, and currently is at the head of the IL in wins (15), ERA (2.22) and opponent batting average (.227).
The right-hander adds these awards to a list of impressive tallies in less than a year. His accolades include being named the starting pitcher for the 2011 XM MLB All-Star Futures Game, touted as one of the top five prospects and top overall prospect in Atlanta's Minor League system by Baseball America and receiving the 2010 Phil Niekro Award as Atlanta's top organizational pitcher.
The Rookie of the Year nod goes to a G-Braves player for the second consecutive year, as the 2010 IL Rookie of the Year went to Gwinnett alum and current Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman. It is the first Most Outstanding Pitcher award won by a G-Brave in the team's three year history. Overall, the honors mark the 7th IL Rookie of the Year award and 5th IL Most Valuable Pitcher award bestowed upon a player on a Braves Triple-A team in history (other awards won as Richmond Braves).
