Canzler, Clippers Cruise Past G-Braves

Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Columbus designated hitter Russ Canzler continued a red hot series on Saturday night, going 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Clippers to a 6-1 win over the Gwinnett Braves. Canzler's bat, combined with 7.0 innings of one-run baseball from right-hander Chris Schwinden, allowed the Clippers to even the series at 2-2 in front of 7,369 fans at Coolray Field.

Gwinnett ace right-hander Julio Teheran, making his first Triple-A start since throwing his first career complete game in a win at Charlotte on June 3, wasn't as sharp this time around. After working through two uneventful innings, he yielded singles to Luke Carlin and Gregorio Petit to start the third inning. Following a sacrifice bunt, Teheran allowed an RBI single to Jason Donald scoring Carlin for a 1-0 Columbus lead. The Clippers threatened for more in the third as Cord Phelps walked and Matt LaPorta was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the G-Braves starter worked free of the jam as he induced Tim Fedroff into a line-out to left.

However, Canzler got to Teheran an inning later, blasting his 3-2 pitch over the left-center fence for a solo home run. Canzler's third homer of the series - sixth of the season - increased the Clipper lead to 2-0.

Gwinnett scored their lone run of the night thanks to surprising power from Jose Constanza. The G-Braves leadoff man ripped a solo home run into the right-field bullpen on a 3-1 pitch from Schwinden in the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Constanza's clout was his first homer since August 12, 2011, when he lifted off for Atlanta against then-Chicago Cubs right-hander Carlos Zambrano.

Teheran (L, 5-3) exited with two earned runs on six hits over 4.0 innings, throwing 86 pitches, 51 for strikes.

Canzler continued his offensive assault against the Gwinnett bullpen, adding to the lead with a sacrifice fly scoring Donald in the fifth against Adam Russell. In the ninth, Canzler broke the game wide open with a three-run double scoring Donald, Phelps and Fedroff. All three runs went unearned to Cory Gearrin as a result of a fielding error by second baseman Lance Zawadzki.

Schwinden (W, 4-5) limited the G-Braves to a run on three hits over 7.0 innings, walking one while striking out three. Cody Allen (H, 3) turned in a scoreless eighth inning, and Frank Herrmann pitched a scoreless non-save ninth.

Constanza had two of Gwinnett's four hits on the night, going 2-for-4 with the home run and one RBI.

Canzler stole the show with two hits and five RBIs, but Carlin also turned in a 3-for-4 night and Pettit added a 2-for-4 performance. Donald went 1-for-4 with two runs score and an RBI as well for the Clippers.

The Gwinnett Braves (37-33) wrap up the five-game series against the Columbus Clippers (32-37) on Sunday at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 2:05 PM. Left-hander Yohan Flande (3-4, 3.90) will start for the G-Braves, while the Clippers counter with right-hander Zach McAllister (4-2, 2.98). The game will be broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM in Gainesville, GA with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.

Sunday is Father's Day at Coolray Field, featuring plenty of family-friendly activities including pre-game catch on the field and a post-game base run for kids 12 and under. The Non-Profit Partnership Series also continues Sunday with the "Heart Month" theme. The G-Braves will recognize organizations that bring awareness and/or raise funds for heart related diseases and illnesses or promote a healthy diet and fitness programs for children.

Tickets for all Gwinnett Braves home games are on sale now at the Coolray Field Box Office. Call (678) 277-0340 or visit gwinnettbraves.com for more information.
