Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, 4-2, Saturday night. Russell Branyan's walk-off home run ended the game in the tenth inning.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (39-30) got to Chiefs starter John Lannan for a first-inning run on back-to-back doubles by Chris Dickerson and Ronnier Mustelier to put the Yankees up 1-0.
Dickerson and Mustelier combined for another Yankees run in the bottom of the third inning. Dickerson led the frame off with a double to left-center field. Then, Mustelier grounded out to third, but as Dickerson attempted to take third on the play, Chiefs first baseman Mark Teahen overthrew third base to allow Dickerson to score the Yankees' second run.
From there though, Lannan righted the ship. He hung four zeroes on the board over his last four innings of work. For the game, Lannan allowed two runs on six hits in seven strong innings.
With Lannan stymieing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Syracuse (32-36) fought back. The Chiefs got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Teahen doubled down the left-field line and came home to score on an RBI single by Xavier Paul. Paul's fifth RBI in the last two games made the score 2-1 Yankees.
The Chiefs tied the game in the sixth inning. Teahen again started the rally, this time tripling to right-center field. On the very next pitch, Brett Carroll singled up the middle to tie the game at two.
The Yankees threatened in both the eighth and ninth innings, putting runners on second with less than two outs in each frame, but Chiefs reliever Christian Garcia worked his way out of both jams to send the game to extras.
In the bottom of the tenth, Jack Cust reached on a single to right field with two outs. That set the table for Branyan, who drilled Hassan Pena's 2-1 pitch over the wall in left-center field to end the game.
The Chiefs and the Yankees wrap up their four-game series on Sunday. Tanner Roark is scheduled to take the mound for Syracuse. Ramon Ortiz will pitch for the Yankees. Game time on Father's Day is set for 2:00.
