Canseco Drives in Four

Committing four errors the Calgary Vipers (20-15) were defeated 13-8 by Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions (11-21) before 2262 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Canseco had the biggest night at the plate for the Scorpions as for a second straight night he hit a two-run home run while also adding a two-run double for a two-for-five night with four runs batted in. Overall Yuma collected 16 hits and scored at least two runs in five different innings.

Garret Holleran (2-4) took the loss in giving up seven runs in three and a third innings while Gilbert De La Vara (3-2) recorded the win after allowing three earned runs in six frames.

Yuma jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when J.J. Muse doubled, Jared McDonald singled, and Arnoldo Ponce drove both in with a two-bagger for a 2-0 lead.

Calgary tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame as with two outs Wilver Perez doubled, Drew Miller was intentionally walked, and Justin Tellam drove in both with a two-bagger.

The Scorpions grabbed back the lead in the second when Chris Falls walked, Brent Cooper singled, Jason Diaz drove one in with a base hit, and Jose Canseco clubbed two home on a double for a 5-2 score.

The Vipers cut within two runs at 5-3 in the bottom of the inning as Louie Templeton reached on a fielding error and with two outs Jonny Kaplan drove him in with a double.

Calgary got within one tally at 5-4 in the third frame when Tellam went deep for a fourth time this season.

Yuma retook a three-run lead in the fourth as Jason Diaz walked and Canseco hit his second home run in as many nights for a 7-4 advantage.

In the fifth inning the Scorpions made it 8-4 when Zach Larson reached on a fielding error and Cooper doubled for a run batted in.

Yuma scored again in the sixth frame as Canseco walked, Ponce singled, and both scored when Nelson Teilon reached on a fielding error for a 10-4 lead.

The Snakes got a run back in the seventh when Kaplan doubled, advanced to third base on a groundout, and scored on Perez RBI groundout for a 10-5 score.

McDonald pushed the lead back to six runs at 11-5 for the Scorpions in the eighth inning with a solo home run.

Another two runs were scored by Yuma in the ninth for a 13-5 advantage as Teilon singled and Larson hit a home run.

Calgary scored in the bottom of the frame when Bryan Burke, Kaplan, and Aaron Dunsmore all singled while the later two scored on a fielding error for a 13-8 final.

This five game series against Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions continues on Canada Day Friday July 1st at 1:05 for Baseball Bonanza, and on Saturday July 2nd at 5:05.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
